Deal gives Corin IP technology for patient-specific hip replacements.
November 28, 2014
By: Michael Barbella
Corin Group plc has acquired Optimized Ortho Pty. Ltd., an Australian orthopedic technology company that specializes in improving implant component positioning and procedural innovation. The acquisition gives Corin an IP-protected Optimized Positioning System (OPS) technology, claimed to be the first of its kind in the orthopedic sector. Optimized Ortho’s OPS technology helps surgeons identify, customize and deliver “an exact patient-specific component orientation designed to optimize biomechanics and functional joint performance,” according to a new release announcing the merger. Every patient has a unique pelvic motion that influences the functionality of a total hip replacement in daily activities. “We are delighted to have the ability to integrate this technology into our compelling product portfolio,” Corin CEO Stefano Alfonsi said. “We recognize that further improvements in hip replacement require developments around procedural innovation as well as implant design. Our vision for the future will be to lead in the area of personalised healthcare, with a specific focus on individual patient-specific dynamics.” A physical assessment and imaging protocol generates data unique to the patient which is then analyzed using patented simulation software to determine their individual kinematic and pelvic motion profile, Corin Group said. Implants then are accurately placed to optimize function using a laser-guided alignment system. Optimized Ortho bigwigs claim the firm’s solution can help improve the performance of total hip replacement for an aging and more active patient population, as conventional acetabular cup placement fails to account for individuals’ functional movement and relies on guidance for cup positioning defined roughly 36 years ago. By acquiring OPS technology, Corin can offer surgeons and patients a customized patient-specific solution for hip surgery designed to provide optimal implant positioning and improved functional outcome. “We are very excited to be entering into this agreement,” said Brad Miles, chief technology officer at Optimized Ortho. “Over the past year we have worked closely with Corin in Australia to combine OPS technology with their hip brands and this deal marks a major milestone in creating a game-changing solution for hip patients worldwide.” Corin plans to roll the system out to its other global markets. Optimized Ortho develops implant alignment technology solutions that help surgeons identify, optimize and deliver exact patient-specific component orientation for optimal biomechanics and functional joint performance. The company uses engineering techniques derived from the aerospace and automotive industries.
